Energy-efficient Car Team of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FT-UB) Apatte Aristo 62 Brawijaya, again, bring UB to the prestigious competition, Shell Eco Marathon (SEM) Asia 2017 which will be held in Singapore, 16 to 19 March 2017. Apatte Aristo 62 Brawijaya team was sent off by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohammad Bisri, MS, at the UB Dieng campus, Wednesday (15/Feb/2017).

“As a campus that is progressive in the international field, UB is committed to fully support innovations, especially students who demonstrate competitiveness at international level. Hopefully Apatte Aristo 62 Brawijaya can motivate the Mechanical Engineering team to make SEM 2017 as the starting point of other international accomplishments,” said Rector, who is also Professor of Water Resources Engineering Department.

In the previous year, the team manage won fifth place out of 26 participants in the Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) Asia 2016 prototype category type with battery-electric fuel, which was held in Manila, Philippines, March 3 to 6, 2016. “This is the third time for Apatte Aristo 62 team became one of the representative of Indonesian team in SEM. We set the international competition standard since the beginning. BE able to won two previous competitions, burst up their confidence in many way. The aerodynamic shape body become one of their key factor,” said Dr. Eng. Denny Widhiyanuriawan, as the team supervisor.

Meanwhile, M Naufal Aditya Fahmi, the team manager describes the preparation of Aristo Apatte 62 since last year. Various field experiments were conducted in Malang Area, including the outdoor field of Kanjuruhan Stadium and UB Dieng. “For the campus area, we only have limited track. Meanwhile, outside the Kanjuruhan stadium there are no obstacle so we can practice to our max, because the field will affect the fuel consumption, which will be competed which will have less energy consumption with the farthest distance. We are grateful for the support of the university to develop the design of this electric car. We did some mechanical overhaul and the vehicle body,” he explained.

Shell Eco Marathon (SEM) is a global competition held by one of giant fuel business, Shell. In the competition themed “To push the boundaries of energy efficiency”, the Shell provides an opportunity for students around the world to develop an efficient machine for energy.

There are two categories competed, Prototype and Urban Concept. In both categories, each subdivided into categories of gasoline, diesel, and ethanol. The winner is the car which can take the farthest distance with the least amount of fuel. (Rhd/HumasFT/mic)
