WhatsApp Image 2017-09-13 at 16.04.29Thanks to her tenacity, Mutiah Abdat, student of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (FT-UB) 2012, invited by Google to have short study in United States. Starting from reviewing one of the ice cream shop in Malang, the youngest daughter of four siblings began her adventure as a local guide via Google Maps application.

“When we review a place on Google Maps, usually we will get an offer email to be local guides, that’s the first step i took before actively join this community,” said this former student of SMAN 4 Bogor.

In 2015, the first time she choose to join in, local guides are still not as sporadically grow as it is today. Mutiah should traces one by one local guides who came from Malang and formed Malang Local Guide community. Together they are actively promoting the local culture, ranging from tourist attractions to small grocery stores in the small village and kampong.

“You can say that we are the official contributor of Google Maps. When there is a misplaced or incorrect information in Google maps we will correct or report it, if there is a new place not in the maps yet, we will mark it. Because the one who know the real conditions is the local, right?” said the girl who wants to continue her study in Urban Design.

Initially, all communications in her community is using the Google platform, until in 2016 google launched Local Guides Connect which allows local guides from around the world to meet in cyberspace or directly. Starting in 2016, Google invited these official Google Maps contributors from around the world to meet and discuss about all obstacles or ideas that arise from things found in the field.

To be able to participate in the local guides summit, ones should be an active Local Guide Level 5 and submit an application that indudes a 1-minute video. Successful applicants will be selected based on their application, active contributions to Google Maps, and involvement in the Local Guides community (like being a moderator or meet-up host) for the past year. Local Guide Summit 2017 registration itself expires on April 24, 2017 at 23:59 pm.

A total of 150 local guides from around the world will gather at Google Campus, San Fransico on 10-13 October 2017. In Indonesia alone elected five people and Mutiah is the only one who came from Malang. Mutiah is very happy to set aside about 200,000 other registrants from Indonesia, no doubt because the entire expenses during their 4 days stay will be paid by this American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products.

“Alhamdulillah, I really did not expect to get an “you are in” email on May 19. This is really a rare opportunity, hopefully this opportunity can add experience and network from various countries,” said the girl who dreamed to continue her study overseas gratefully. (mic)
