Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (FT-UB) has been challenged by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia to be an agent of independence energy for the community and other universities. This mandate is a follow-up to the achievements of FT-UB as a nominee in the “Energy Award 2015” organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. At the event, FT-UB is the only university nominated in the Energy Initiative Awards, Community category.

As nominees in this event, the Dean of FT-UB Dr. Ir. Pitojo Tri Juwono, MT had the opportunity to attend the Independence Day Ceremony at the Merdeka Palace and met President Joko Widodo on August 18, 2015 at the Presidential Palace in Bogor. Participated in the open house is Paskibraka team, TNI Taruna Academy Honor Guard and the Police Academy, Bahana Gita Nusantara Orchestra, and the Teladan Nasional. The announcement of the winner of this award, according to the Dean, will be conducted at the National Archipelago Day or at The National Energy Day this year.

Interviewed in his office, Thursday (20/Aug/2015), originally FT-UB does not designed to accept this award. About six months ago, the Dean respond to the letter of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral RI to send a portfolio or company profile, and so do all Faculty of Engineering in Indonesia, related to their concern on energy development. It was felt that the development of energy, has became the activity of FT-UB. More than 100 thesis titles and dissertation discusses about environmentally friendly electrical energy, including hydropower study. The three majors in the FT-UB Electrical Engineering, Water Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering contribute to the development of Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP). While more than 50 titles of research related to the MHP has been developed in cooperation with institutions such as PT. PJB, Paiton, and PLN.

According to the Organization and Administration of Work (OTK) 2013, FT-UB established the Agency for Research and Community Service (BPP). It includes the roadmap of provision of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy. Interaction with the public  done through the independent research and service conducted by the lecturers involving students.

Pitojo explained, project development of environmentally friendly energy in the FT-UB has started a long time ago and sporadically did by lecturers FT-UB. And since three years ago, they developed model of the target area in Central Java and East Java. In those target area, they map the condition, including the problems and the potential for exploration and exploitation.

FT-UB now has 18 target area. Together with FT-UB, discussions with the target area is conducted every year to map out the problems faced by each area. The problem noted are include electricity, drinking water, pipeline, and animal husbandry.

Of the 18 villages, Pitojo stated, 10 of them (60%) has completed. Physical assistance given by the FT-UB  includes MHP (4 units), the installation of biogas (44 units), solar panels, and hydraulic ram.

For MHP, FT-UB asissted from the design, construction, to mentoring. This accompaniment, described Pitojo, is done to educate and teach those area to manage assets, operationalize, maintain, and management. From the operational data, it is known that 1 unit of MHP is able to supply power up to 250 Watt/houses at a cost of 15 thousand/head of the family. During the year, reportedly they collected Rp. 1 million rupiah cash. “In fact, many of them pay with crops,” said Pitojo.

MHP installations have been conducted in Bendosari Village Malang, Kalijari Village Blitar, and Andungbiru Village Probolinggo. The water based MHP installation, according to Pitojo also educate the community to conserve forests and rivers at the same time so it always clean and the debits always maintained.

For biogas installations, it has been installed in several villages as Purwoharjo, Cemorokandang, Tajinan, and Tegalweru. The FT-UB Biogas, according Pitojo, also has a storage unit so that the gas that has been processed can be stored.

Meanwhile, solar panel with solar power panels tree design were  installed in front of UB as well as in some of the gazebo in FT-UB.

Hydraulic ram is a pump that is capable of transmitting and distributing water to higher elevations without the help of machines. With the power of the water itself, hydraulic ram will carry water to the reservoir at a higher place, to then flow down to the principle of gravity. “The use of diesel engines to pump the water would cost a cash to purchase the fuel,” said Pitojo. In addition, he said the people do not have the expense of maintenance and operating costs.

“One of our laboratory studies is the energy problem,” he said. For example is the MHPP unit, FT-UB products have originality in the design of the turbine and generator. “Our product is unique because it refers to existing research in the laboratory,” he added.

With a budget of up to Rp 2.5 Billion, FT-UB supports community service efforts. With the partner villages as model area, he think the activity will be focused more and have a wider impact on aspects of economic, social, cultural, and encourage positive changes. [Denok/Humas UB/mic]
