sugengDepartment of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Engineering Brawijaya University again presented a doctor of Energy Conversion field on Friday, April 24, 2018. Located in the 2nd floor Room of Mechanical Engineering Department, the Open Examination Dissertation led by Prof. Ir. ING. Wardana, M. Eng., Ph.D.

Sugeng Hadi Susilo, a lecturer of State Polytechnic of Malang (POLINEMA), raised the Study of Glycerol Nitration Process On Focused Microchannel Hydrodynamics as a graduation requirement from UB Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Doctoral Program, on Energy Conversion.

Nitroglycerin (C3H5(ONO2)) is generally produced by nitration of glycerol under suitable conditions for the formation of nitric acid ester, but the process is very dangerous due to very fast chemical reactions and exothermically. The study aims to determine the role of microchannel geometry and its reactants.

Nitroglycerin is a compound that can be used as a medicine to relieve pain, reducing the frequency of angina pectoris attack and as an explosive. It is also used in mining and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the need of nitroglycerin in Indonesia is very high, especially for the National Defense.

In his research Sugeng perform simulations using ANSYS program and experiments using a microscope connected with camera dinocapture. Regarding the glycerol nitration behavior that is influenced by the ratio of focus using three comparisons (1:2, 1:1, 2:1,  and velocity ratio (v2/v1), velocity flow and reactant concentration (2M, 5M, and 10M).

In his research, it is found that there is  differences in low-speed ratio with high-speed ratio. At a smaller speed ratio has the largest focal width. Judging from the mixing efficiency, the greater the speed ratio the higher the mixing efficiency is. The larger the flow rate the smaller the flow focus width and the greater the mixing efficiency.

The smaller the flow focus ratio is, the smaller the focal width flow and result in greater mixing efficiency. The differences affect the volume of the reactants in both initial and the transition states due to hydration at the elementary stage.

The greater the concentration of the reactants will reduce the focus width and the greater the mixing efficiency. With higher concentrations of reactants the greater the particle to collide.

Sugeng who is also a technopreneur is entitled Doctor by defending his dissertation and graduate with a very satisfying predicate. He must defend his dissertation in front of a team of examiners who consist of Prof. Ir. ING. Wardana, M. Eng., Ph.D., Dr.Eng. Denny Widhiyanuriyawan, ST., MT., and Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Djoko Kustono, M.Pd. Acting as a supervising commission is: Prof. Ir. Sudjito S.Ph.D., Dr. Nurkholis Hamidi, ST. M. Eng., and Diah Mardiana, MSi.

Also present at this open examination, Vice Director II of State Polytechnic of Malang, Dr.Eng. Anggit Murdani, ST., M.Eng. “Hopefully what is gained during the study is beneficial for both Dr. Sugeng and institutions. After this, hopefully, Dr. Sugeng can soon return to serve on campus,” said this lecturer majoring in Mechanical Engineering POLINEMA expectantly. (mic)
