WhatsApp Image 2019-04-11 at 11.06.23The Water Resources Engineering (WRE) Student Association, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) again held the Indonesia Water Building Competition (KBAI). Began in 2017, KBAI has been considered as the biggest water resources competition in Indonesia, this was revealed by the Chairperson of the WRE Student Association, Yayang Saputra at the opening of the KBAI 2019 (11/Apr/2019).

Starting in early January, dozens of teams from universities throughout Indonesia have sent proposals, but only ten teams were selected to take part in the Final Stage on 11-13 April 2019 held in the WRE New Building.

The ten teams then present their work in front of juries that consist of Prof. Dr. Ir. Moh. Bisri (WRE UB Professor), Dr. Ir. John Paulus Pantouw, M.S (Vice III of the National Construction Services Development Institute), and Dian Kamila, ST, MT (Directorate of Rivers and Beaches).

IMG_1716Universities that qualify for the final round are Universitas Brawijaya (Nirada Abirama 64, Doryoku 64, and Terasha 64), Indonesia University of Education/UPI (Banyu Anarghya), Malang State University (Agrapana Team), University of Indonesia (Reswara and Makara Biru), Institut National Technology Bandung/Itenas (Gangga Adiwijaya, Orson), and Bandung Institute of Technology (Amreta Abersil).

The issue raised in this competition is the phenomenon of Indonesia as a country that has 458 large watersheds,  3,200 billion m3/year. This potential can be utilized to meet development needs in various sectors of life; irrigation, agriculture, industry, household consumption, tourism, river transportation, and other needs.

Utilization of Water Resources (SDA) must be accompanied by comprehensive, integrated, and environmentally sound management with the aim of realizing the sustainable use of water resources for the greatest prosperity of the people as referred to in the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 7 of 2004.

In meeting the water needs that continue to increase along with population growth, the use of water resources becomes uncontrolled, accompanied by changes in land use and land conversion and development that does not heed the environment, it’s causing damage to the watershed.

IMG_1720This damage causes changes in hydrological conditions, river morphology, water quality, and environmental sustainability, and raises a variety of problems, especially flooding in urban residential areas that have an impact on public health, disruption of social and economic activities due to inundation of roads, loss of property and even lives.

This was also expressed by the FTUB Dean, Dr. Ir. Pitojo Tri Juwono, MT when opening the program that morning. He stated that Indonesia has extraordinary natural resource potential. There are five pillars of natural resource management in Indonesia; conservation, utilization, destructive power control, good information systems, and community empowerment.

IMG_1741“This KBAI is one of the efforts on the utilization and control of damaged power items. Students are taught to look for case studies in certain areas and provide solutions to how those problems can be minimized or even eliminated,” he explained.

The case study raised in this competition is handling floods in urban areas and to reduce watershed damage due to development. With the theme of Innovation to repair and maintain watersheds as an effort to conserve water resources in order to reduce the risk of flooding in sustainable development-based urban areas KBAI 2019 is determined to contribute in the form of ideas and then be applied in the community.

“At least with this, we can participate in comprehensive, integrated and environmentally sound watershed management and reduce losses due to floods. Hopefully, later all the students work here in this competition can contribute to solving watershed problems in Indonesia,” Moch. Rendy Dwi Laksana said as Chairperson.
