Offer a Charging Station Fueled by Exhaust Gas, Engineering Students Rewarded with Gold
The Smartuition team, Faculty of Engineering UB (FTUB) won a Gold Medal and Special Awards from Malaysia Innovation, Invention and Creativity Association (MIICA) in the 2021 International Invention Competition for Young Muslim Scientists. This was announced online on July 4, 2021.
Guided by Supriyono, ST, MT, the team consists of Aditya Aulia A Rachman (Electrical Eng.), Adrian Adam Indrabayu (Electrical Eng.), Balqis Intan Azzahra (Industrial Eng.), Erina Azahra Amalia (Chemical Eng.), and Prisma Ardaneswari Khairina (Chemical Eng.).
These five students from the 2019 class offer a charging station made from materials that are free of exhaust emissions.
“Our innovation converts CO2 gas produced from sugar factories into electricity which will later be used for electric cars,” said Adrian representing the team.
He explained how their innovation works. It converts CO2 into methanol, then the methanol is converted into electricity through the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell reaction.
The electricity generated will be accommodated at a charging station and can later be used by electric cars.
“The existing charging stations are usually still sourced from coal, here we offer a charging station made of materials that do not cause exhaust gas emissions, but instead utilize CO2 gas into electricity,” he concluded. (mic)
