DETRIC: Machine Learning Based Brain Wave Abnormality Detector for Identifying Types of Mental Disorders
Continuous innovation is created by Universitas Brawijaya (UB) students. This time the 5 (five) combined students from 3 faculties include Muhammad Rizki Cakramedia (Electrical Engineering 2021); Irfan Dzaki Fajarhari (Electrical Engineering 2023); Muhammad Satya Buana Prawira (Electrical Engineering 2021); Aisyiyah Windy Febrianti (Doctor’s Education 2022); and Zayed Sulthon (Biology 2022) created a tool called DETRIC.
Under the guidance of Ir. Zainul Abidin, S.T., M.Eng., M.T., Ph.D., and Dr. Dr. Shahdevi Nandar Kurniawan, Sp.S (K), DETRIC is a Brain Wave Detector at an affordable price. This tool works by using dry electrodes to measure brain waves, which are then processed using a homemade Brain Wave Detector module, an Arduino nano microcontroller, and processed with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as a classification system and to detect abnormalities.
“This tool was born because so far in the classification of mental disorders, diagnosis still often relies on phenomenology or the doctor’s interpretation of symptoms, which can cause heterogeneity of symptoms in the same category,” explained Irfan Dzaki.
DERTRIC itself is a device that combines low cost and portable EEG and an artificial neural network (ANN) classification system. The parameters are an increase or decrease in the average value of PSD and FC, depending on the type of disease.
Users can find out detection results easily because they use a website that can be accessed on the user’s laptop. So this tool can display detection results on a laptop and with compact and lightweight dimensions, allows detection of psychiatric disorders easily, accurately, and creates health and well-being in society.
Dzaki continued that with its advantages, this tool is able to detect as many as 11 types of mental disorders, namely Alcohol use disorder, Behavioral addiction disorder, Panic disorder, Social anxiety disorder, Bipolar disorder, Depressive disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Schizophrenia, Acute stress disorder, Adjustment disorder , and Posttraumatic stress disorder.
“The DETRIC Brain Wave Detector Tool will be cheaper than EEG in hospitals in general,” he continued.
This product from the PKM team proves that the Brain Wave Detector can be produced at a relatively cheaper price than EEG in general, and can also help treat mental disorders, so that it can support the program of creating good health and well being, which is one of the Sustainable Development Goals.
DETRIC is one of the innovations that has been selected to receive funding for the Student Creativity Program-Karsa Cipta (PKM-KC) held by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2024. So this DETRIC has received responsibility for government funding and will be beneficial not only for people with mental disorders only, but the entire community around him.[drn]
