Household Waste Management Through Liquid Organic Fertilizer in Ngadilangkung Village
The Laboratory of Environment, Infrastructure, and Information System (EIIS) from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB), conducted a community service program in Ngadilangkung Village, Kepanjen District, Malang Regency, from July 8 to 30, 2024.
This program involved lecturers, laboratory staff, and students from the 2022 cohort of the Urban and Regional Planning undergraduate program, aiming to positively impact the community while developing students’ social and leadership skills through the practical application of their knowledge.
The community service activities began with an initial survey and building mapping in Ngadilangkung Village. The team conducted direct observations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the village’s condition and to collect baseline data that would guide the subsequent phases of the project.
“The building mapping process used ArcGIS technology to create an accurate database of the village’s layout and the condition of its structures,” stated Imma Widyawati Agustin, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Head of the EIIS Laboratory.
Following the mapping, the community service team identified the issues in the village through in-depth interviews with local residents. This step aimed to gather information about the community’s challenges, particularly concerning household waste management. The collected data was then used to map out the village’s potential and problems, especially related to waste management.
The results of this mapping served as the foundation for the team to formulate solutions. One proposed solution was the production of liquid organic fertilizer from household organic waste. This solution aimed not only to reduce environmental pollution but also to add economic value for the community by utilizing waste as a valuable resource.
As the final part of the community service program, the EIIS team conducted a socialization event with the residents of Ngadilangkung Village on July 31, 2024, at the Ngadilangkung Village Hall. The village head, Puji Mahrudin, S.E., expressed his appreciation for this activity.
“Thank you. I hope that after this program, the villagers will be more proactive in managing household waste, in line with the ‘Clean and Beautiful Village’ program, which aims to create a clean and tidy village environment,” said the Village Head.
This socialization was designed to provide the residents with an understanding of the importance of proper waste management and the process of making liquid organic fertilizer. During the event, the community service team also provided hands-on training on the techniques of making liquid organic fertilizer and its benefits for agriculture.
This community service program reflects the commitment of higher education institutions, particularly Universitas Brawijaya, to making a tangible contribution to society. Through this activity, the EIIS laboratory plays an active role in supporting the residents of Ngadilangkung Village in managing household waste more effectively and sustainably.
