The Industrial Engineering (ID: Teknik industri, TI) Department of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held the 3rd International Conference on Engineering and Management in Industrial System (ICOEMIS) on October 3, 2024.

Held at the 6th-floor Auditorium of the TI Building, this year’s conference was themed “Circular Engineering: a Sustainable Future for Science and Industry”.

Chairman of the ICOEMIS 2024 Committee, Rakhmat Himawan, ST., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his gratitude to all the participants.

“We are pleased to see the growth of this conference each year. In its third edition, the number of participants reached 80 from various countries, with 44 attending virtually and 36 attending in person,” he said.

Circular engineering, which focuses on the efficient and sustainable use of resources through recycling and waste reduction, has now become an integral part of the curriculum and research at UB’s Industrial Engineering Department.

The first Plenary Session featured two Invited Speakers: Slamet Harianto from PT. Pertamina (PERSERO), Indonesia, and Assoc. Prof. Nurhadi Siswanto, Ph.D., representing BKSTI and also from ITS.

The conference also featured three keynote speakers: Prof. Ir. Dr. Nik Nazri Bing Nik Ghazali from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia; Prof. Benny Tjahjono from the University of Coventry, UK; and Prof. Teruaki Ito from Okayama University, Japan.

They shared insights on the importance of implementing circular engineering across various sectors and proposed interdisciplinary collaborative strategies to foster sustainable innovation.

UB’s Rector, Prof. Widodo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.Med.Sc., emphasized the need for collaboration between academics, industries, and global stakeholders to advance the circular economy.

He revealed that UB’s Faculty of Engineering had published more than 50 research papers on circular economy principles in the past five years, with 30% of them published in international journals.

UB’s collaboration with industries and global institutions has further strengthened the university’s position in sustainable engineering.

Prof. Widodo also invited researchers and professionals to join the “10,000 Visiting Professor” program, which will start next year.

“This program aims to invite international professors to share knowledge, collaborate, and produce beneficial solutions, while also sparking productive and constructive discussions,” he concluded before officially opening the event.

After inaugurating ICOEMIS 2024, UB’s Rector also had the opportunity to officially launch and personally try out the Industrial Engineering Coworking Space.

This is a form of contribution from Paragon Corp, as part of the collaboration and partnership agreement between Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya for the Entrepreneurship Class. (mic)
