Lancaster University and Universitas Brawijaya Strengthen Collaboration in Modern Manufacturing Technology

Lancaster University School of Engineering Strengthens Partnership with Universitas Brawijaya to Support Research and Technology Development in Additive Manufacturing, Robotics, and Engineering Design.

Contact has been established with Lancaster University, specifically with Prof. Allan Rennie, through intensive communication facilitated by Dr. Yudhi Ariadi, a lecturer at Warwick University and an alumnus of Universitas Brawijaya’s Mechanical Engineering class of 1990.

The collaboration was chosen based on Prof. Allan Rennie’s expertise in Additive Manufacturing, which is highly needed to support the research project for developing BRONE UB robots.

The collaboration was led by Prof. Dr. Moch. Agus Choiron, Dr. Gembong Edhi Setyawan, and Dr. Ir. Diva Kurnianingtyas, S.Kom., took place from September 9–13, 2024, at Lancaster University and around Manchester, UK.

The event began with the opening of Engineering Building 2, Lancaster University’s latest innovation hub. Delegates, including UB representatives, toured labs covering disciplines like Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering.

Dr. Hayaatun Sallem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Foundation, enriched the occasion with a guest lecture on her role as an influential woman in European technology.

Day two featured discussions between Prof. Allan from Lancaster and the UB team on research methods suitable for scientific journals. Prof. Allan also introduced advanced 3D printing technologies used in his lab, including Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS).

“This discussion provided practical insights on safety, materials, and techniques like chemical treatment and parameter calibration for printed specimens,” said Prof. Choiron.

The UB team also tested 3D scanners, including the well-known FARO brand, which will soon be implemented in UB’s lab. The trials provided insights into developing CAD-based technology for engineering applications.

The UB delegation attended the Smart Manufacturing Event in Manchester, where academia and industry leaders explored strategies in manufacturing’s industrial revolution.

Held at the GM Digital Security Hub, the event enabled Lancaster and UB to expand networks and exchange ideas with global organizations.

On the final day, Prof. Dr. Moch. Agus Choiron signed a collaboration agreement between Lancaster University and UB, aimed at advancing joint research projects in additive manufacturing and robotics.

“This partnership will also facilitate the installation of new facilities at UB’s labs to support research in 3D printing and engineering design innovation,” he noted.

With this agreement, Lancaster University and Universitas Brawijaya commit to further strengthening collaboration in modern engineering research, contributing to global industrial development.
