Professor Agung Sugeng Develops Environmentally Friendly I-SMS Concept

Tuesday (22/4/2025) Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) officially added a Professor (Professor) where Prof. Ir. Agung Sugeng Widodo, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. was officially inaugurated as the 31st active professor at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the 421st Professor of Universitas Brawijaya.

In his presentation, he explained Heating Innovation for Sustainable Energy. According to him, the use of fossil energy is a global challenge, including the increasing need and impact of its use on the environment.

“This intensive energy use not only causes carbon emissions but also increases dependence on non-renewable resources. This requires innovation in combustion technology and energy efficiency, with a major focus on global research and development,” he explained.

In addition, the new professor in the field of Energy and Gas Combustion science at the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the concept of I-SMS (Innovation of Material and Fin Sheath), a finned heat reflector that functions to capture and reflect heat back from conventional stoves, for thermal efficiency. According to him, the distance between the sheath and loading affects gas efficiency.

He explained that I-SMS proves that adding a sheath with certain materials and configurations to a water heating system can increase efficiency by 8 percent, because the process of capturing and reflecting heat is isolated inside the sheath.

“Previous studies have shown that heat reflectors or covers have the ability to increase the efficiency of LPG stoves. Various materials and dimensions of the reflector have been reported to produce different levels of improvement. In addition, the reflective properties of the material also affect its ability to reflect heat,” he said.

According to him, the concept is not only adding material to the system, but also applying fins at certain angles to produce maximum efficiency. Although the system becomes more complex and requires more intensive maintenance, this innovation is a significant breakthrough in energy efficiency. [drn/vq]
