Leading FPSO Expert Company Present and Targets FTUB Students
The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) once again hosted a national-level scientific activity. This time, PT Armada Gema Nusantara (PT AGN) held a seminar and workshop entitled Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) on Thursday (22/5/2025) at the Prof. Ir. Suryono Auditorium, FTUB Dean’s Building.
Universitas Brawijaya is the third campus chosen by PT AGN in their series of workshop roadshows, after previously being successfully held at the University of Indonesia (UI) and the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). This activity was attended by hundreds of students, lecturers, and engineering practitioners, especially from the Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering departments.
This workshop aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the FPSO system and technology, namely offshore production vessels capable of carrying out the process of oil production, storage, and delivery to carrier vessels. This technology is the backbone of the modern offshore oil and gas industry.
Dean of FT UB, Prof. Ir. Prof. Hadi Suyono, ST., MT., Ph.D., IPU, conveyed the importance of this seminar as a step to introduce students to specific challenges and opportunities in the industry.
“FPSO is part of the production process. The Faculty of Engineering has study programs such as Industrial Engineering and Chemical Engineering that study the production process specifically, including in the oil and gas sector. This seminar helps students understand specific problems in the industry and how to overcome the gap between academic knowledge and industry needs through an integrative curriculum,” explained Prof. Hadi.
In addition, Prof. Hadi also emphasized the opportunity for research collaboration between FT UB and companies such as PT AGN. According to him, this activity can encourage technology development and knowledge transfer between academics and industry practitioners.
Meanwhile, Agung Priyo Sembodo as Vice President of AGN in his presentation highlighted the safety aspect as a crucial element that is often overlooked by students and novice engineers.
“Safety is not only about work safety, but also includes installation integrity, environmental preservation, and company reputation. Students must understand process safety and process control to ensure operations run safely and efficiently,” said Agung.
Agung also discussed global trends such as digitalization and green energy that influence FPSO design and operations. He emphasized that companies are increasingly integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their technological innovations.
“Trends such as going green and carbon tax encourage us to produce environmentally friendly technological solutions. FPSO designs must be able to reduce carbon emissions and provide added value without damaging the environment,” he added.
Agung gave a message to students to prepare themselves to face industry challenges.
“Don’t limit yourself. Strengthen your mentality, especially in terms of surviving and fighting. The world of work requires individuals with strong technical skills, problem-solving mentality, and the ability to work in a team. Be a good team player, because teamwork is the key to success in the industry,” he concluded.
The workshop also became a means of building networks between students and the industry. PT AGN opened internship opportunities and introduced HR development programs that were open to students from partner campuses, including Universitas Brawijaya. With the success of this activity, FTUB hopes to continue to collaborate with strategic industries such as PT AGN.[drn/din]
