Air pollution which is generally known by the public is pollution originating from factory fumes, vehicles and so on so that the source of air pollution is more often associated as an outdoor environment problem.

People are less aware that inside the house there are also many pollutant producers that can reduce the quality of the air around them. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study even states that indoor air pollution can be 2-5 times greater than outdoor pollution. Activities carried out inside the house as well as objects that can be found every day such as cooking and painting walls also contribute to air pollution.

The house is expected to be a place of rest and activity that is free of all types of pollution that are harmful to health. Therefore, many air purifiers were created to reduce air pollutants.

But unfortunately, air purification products on the market have a fairly high price, so it is not so friendly in the pockets of the Indonesian people who are mostly middle to lower-income economic communities.

Realizing this problem, Asti Ainun Nabilah (FT’2017), Intan Rosita Dewi (FT’2017) and Sriwati Ajrina Sani (FT’2016) under the guidance of Wasiska Iyati ST., MT., Created an economical air purifier design made from coconut shell activated carbon which is named Coal-APA (Coconut Coal Air Purifier Agent).

Activated carbon made from coconut shell was chosen because Indonesia, which is a tropical country, is an ideal location for the growth of coconut plants (Cocos Nucifera), so that raw materials are easier to obtain, renewable, and prices can be much cheaper than activated carbon made of wood, bamboo or stone embers

 

In addition, activated carbon made from coconut shell has denser particles than other activated carbon so that it has high adsorption capacity for pollutant particles such as CO, CO2, SO, O3, and NO2. This capability is utilized in Coal-APA products to reduce levels of indoor pollutants.

Coal-APA is designed as an interior component in a modular form so that it can be arranged into a wall partition according to the creativity and needs of users so that it can also increase the aesthetic value of the room. Because Coal-APA does not need electricity to operate, its application can be done anywhere. In addition, its production costs 50% lower than most air purification products so it will be more friendly in the bag.
