fire (1)Indonesia has a very large forest area, the risk of forest fires is also large. As a tropical country located on the equator, Indonesia has two cycles season each year, the dry season and the rainy season.

During the dry season, the air temperature will increase so that some hot spots, especially peatlands, have a high potential for forest fires.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that there were 2,710 disasters that had occurred from 2017 until 2019. Among them were forest and land fires totaling 110 incidents with 332 hectares of land and forest damage.

In an effort to increase awareness of the occurrence of forest fires, three students of the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) created DISTECH (Disaster Detection Technology). This innovation is an IoT-based disaster detection technology as an effort to reduce the impact of forest fires.

fire (2)DISTECH consists of two main parts, the Sensor Node and Server Node. The Node sensor consists of fire sensors, gas sensors, and temperature sensors that are placed at certain points in the forest while the Node Server is placed in the area around the forest or settlements that have internet networks.

Data that has been read by the Sensor Node will be sent to the Node Server using radio frequency (LoRa). DISTECH uses a point to point delivery system to streamline its performance.

The data received by the Node Server will be uploaded to IoT Platform and can be monitored anytime and anywhere (realtime) through the Android application and web-based database while connected to the internet. DISTECH is also equipped with a warning system if the system detects signs of forest fires.

fire (1)“Hopefully this innovation can be used as disaster prevention so that it can reduce the impact and potential for the occurrence of forest fires, especially in Indonesia,” hoped one of the team members, Bagas Priyo Hadi Wibowo.

Bagas made this innovation with his two colleagues, Rizka Sisna Riyanti, and Muhammad Kholifa Bihaque. Under the guidance of Eka Maulana ST., MT., M. Eng., The team will fight to the XXXII National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) in August 2019. (HumasFTUB)
