IKA (2)The relocation of the new capital to East Kalimantan by President Jokowi is still the hot issue in Indonesia. In this case, Universitas Brawijaya Alumni Association (IKA UB) held an IKA UB Expert Discussion Series through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on water governance.

Taking the theme of the Management of Raw and Clean Water in the Region of the New Capital of East Kalimantan, this FGD was held in Prof. Ir. Suryono Auditorium, 2nd floor of the Faculty of Engineering Building Universitas Brawijaya, Wednesday (4/Sep/2019).

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering who is also an expert in Water Resources expressed his appreciation to IKA-UB who trusted FTUB in the first event of the Expert Discussion Series.

ika1“It is an honor for us to be the host in this first expert discussion series. I am sure those who are present here also want to contribute to manage water in the new capital. How to manage water and its carrying capacity well so that it has sustainability, benefits, and not cause destructive power that causes disaster,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Pitojo Tri Juwono, MT in his remarks.

Before the discussion session began, the Chairperson of IKA UB, Ahmad Erani Yustika gave an introduction. He said that this expert discussion series would become a regular program of IKA-UB so that universities would not only become ivory towers but also participate in the development of the country.

“Universities and their alumni must be present at the brainstorm of ideas that discuss these important issues,” said the man who is also the President Adviser for Economic Affairs.

IKA (1)In addition to Erani, 3 other speakers also present in this discussion; FTUB Professor Mohammad Bisri, Director of Perum Jasa Tirta 1 Raymond Valiant R, and Director of Water Resources Stewardship Development Directorate General of SDA Ministry of PUPR Fauzi Idris.

Fauzi explained, the availability of raw water depends on the population. Until 2024, he said, East Kalimantan is estimated to have a population of 4.1 million.

“It requires a large quantity and quality of water to cover it. Keep in mind, the potential of water in Kalimantan is very large,” he explained.

While Raymond Valiant R explained the importance of prioritizing engagement with SOEs. The matter of moving the capital to East Kalimantan, he said, was because in Java the water crisis was prone to disasters.

ika2“The government can give special priority to SOEs to ensure that the state should also control the development of water management. The state must be present,” said the Head of UB’s IKA Special Natural Resources Division.

Different things were delivered by Mohammad Bisri. This Professor of FT UB said, besides preparing water management, qualified human resources are needed.

ika3“The government must provide adequate technology to take care of this problem. Not just changing dirty into clean water, but must produce good quality water of all time. This challenge must be supported by qualified human resources, must be prepared as well and soon as possible,” he said.

At the forum, Bisri proposed the holding of a follow-up forum that was concerned with sociological HR in the new capital.

IKA UB recommends several points for new capitals in East Kalimantan including the provision of massive infrastructure. In addition, the state budget is limited so that the procurement of infrastructure requires the presence of business entities both state and private. (HumasFTUB)
