Converting Waste Into Renewable Power Plants, Engineering Students Win 1st Place

Students of the Department of Water Resources Engineering (WRE), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB), again made a proud achievement. This time came from the Scientific Writing Contest organized by the Marine Paper Competition (MAPATION) which is a series of events from the Marine Icon 2019 by the Marine Systems Engineering Student Association, Faculty of Marine Engineering (FTK), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS) Surabaya, Saturday (2/Nov/2019).

With the theme of “Implementation of Student Creativity and Innovation to Develop Indonesia’s Potential in Realizing SDGs 2030”, this competition was participated by various universities in Indonesia. Among them are ITS, UB, Diponegoro University, Padjadjaran University, Pertamina University, etc.

The PARAMUDA-64 team, fronted by Arvin Zypa, Chatherine Grace, and Mirsa Ayu, create an innovation entitled WASHCITY SYSTEM (Waste Water with Microhydro for Electricity Power and Clean Water Sources System). Under the guidance of Dr.Eng Riyanto Haribowo ST MT the team won first place.

By utilizing domestic wastewater and rainwater as a source of renewable electricity generation as well as a source of raw water that can be utilized as a flora-fauna cultivation. The team intends to reduce the impact of increased electricity consumption and the impact of domestic wastewater that can pollute rivers.

“Our concept uses environmentally friendly technology and has various advantages,” said one team member, Mirsa.

This 2017 class student added, their innovation is able to produce renewable electricity, help improve the economy, reduce the impact of river pollution due to domestic wastewater, be able to reduce rainwater run-off, recharge ground water, and open various jobs vacancies.

“This project is also able to realize 12 points from 17 points SDGs in 2030,” Chatherine added.

This team stated that they did not expect that the team could get first place. Because the other finalists also presented ideas that were no less good.

“Thank you for all the support given to us, hopefully this planning concept can be applied in the real world,” hopes Arvin  represents the team. (cat/mic)
