DERING, Smart Headband to Prevent Disability in Epilepsy Patient

A total of five students across departments from Electrical Engineering and Medicine at Brawijaya University created a brain wave detection tool based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which can prevent disability for epilepsy sufferers.

Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain’s electrical activity that can occur in everyone and at various ages. Even though seizures or epilepsy can lead to disability and even death, this disease is still often neglected in Indonesia. Until now, no tool can directly monitor the condition if a patient experiences a seizure.

This is the background to the creation of DERING (Detection and Monitoring Epileptic Seizures), assembled in the form of a smart headband so that it is easy to use and useful in preventing disability in epilepsy patients.

“This technology integrates artificial intelligence and processes various parameters such as brain waves, heart rate, and body tilt to detect epileptic seizures. DERING also monitors these parameters from smartphones, so that the sufferer’s family can know the sufferer’s activities and position. The advantages of DERING include a comfortable design, artificial intelligence that can detect abnormal brain wave activity, emergency service features, and consultation with a doctor. DERING was created for disability limitation or to prevent adverse events such as death due to epilepsy. Because epilepsy sufferers can experience seizures at any time and anywhere,” said the Team Leader, Ilham Fathurrahman Hamzah.

DERING device offers various benefits to epilepsy sufferers, starting from its economical price, safety, and comfort to use. Patients can be monitored in real-time, thereby preventing disability and even death.

By utilizing EEG sensors and Accelerometer Gyroscope sensors, DERING can capture brain waves such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma, pulse, and position coordinates signals.

DERING is also equipped with a danger alarm for people around the sufferer so that help can be provided immediately when a seizure occurs. This technology is connected to a smartphone application so that it can display monitoring results from the Electroencephalography (EEG) sensor and Accelerometer Gyroscope sensor, the location of epilepsy sufferers, education related to epilepsy, a doctor’s consultation feature, and DERING will contact emergency services automatically if there is an emergency through the emergency call feature.

“It is hoped that Ring EEG can be a solution for epilepsy patients to carry out normal activities by minimizing the worries of family and relatives because they can monitor conditions and location in real time” Speeches from Mentors / Hopes for Epilepsy Patients

This idea has received funding assistance from the Ministry of Education and Culture in the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in the field of Creative Work and will compete to take part in the upcoming PIMNAS XXXVI selection.

DERING is supervised by Electrical Engineering Lecturer, Ir. Nurussa’adah, M.T., and Medical Lecturer dr. Shahdevi Nandar Kurniawan, Sp. S(K). This team consists of Ilham Fathurrahman Hamzah (FT’21), Lukman Hidayat (FT’21), Steffany Dilent (FT’21), Nidya Sekarsari Setyabudi (FK’21), and Nasim Amar (FK’20).
