Architecture of FT Participates in Building Malang Heritage Area

Working together to build the country. This sentence is very attached to the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya. Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya held an event titled “International Conference of Heritage and Culture in the Integrated Urban Context 2019 (Dwelling 2019) on October 24, 2019.

The event was held at the Prof. Ir. Suryono The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Building was opened by the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya, represented by the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Ir. Moch. Sasmito Djati, MS., accompanied by the Dean of FTUB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Pitojo Tri Juwono, MT.

The purpose of this international conference is to bring together stakeholders involved in the development, conservation, and management of historic cities. Researchers from universities, central and regional governments, NGOs, private sector and community groups will share thoughts and knowledge about the management and development of cultural heritage in each environment and city.

Being one of the speakers at the conference, Chair of the Department of Architecture, Dr. Ir. Herry Santosa. He explained one of his researches on one area in Malang, Kayutangan. The heritage area which has many ancient buildings has historical value and has a great tourism potential.

He explained his research on how to revive the future woodlands. This is in line with the exposure of one of the keynote speakers during the afternoon, the Mayor of Malang, Drs. H. Sutiaji.

Sutiaji explained about how the development and management of Malang city as a historic city with a rich cultural heritage in Indonesia. In this case, the area that he has just launched is the Capital of the Heritage of Malang Raya.

“Our commitment is to respect history so that we are not separated from national identity. One of them is Malang Heritage Destination. We want buildings in Malang City not to be too high because what we sell is the view, and I want to give homework to the academic community here to make a symbol of Malang, one that will make Malang unique, anyone who enters the Malang area will feel in Malang,” said the Lamongan origin man challenged all the academics present.

Sutiaji continued, there will be 2 divisions in the Kayutangan area, namely heritage areas and heritage buildings. “We already have a cultural heritage area and in the future we will strengthen these buildings with incentives and disincentives to remain a cultural heritage,” he said.

He added, it has been declared that Kayutangan will be the capital of cultural heritage. In the future, the region will become a single lane, WiFi networks will be strengthened. Then for tourists who want to go to Bromo do not need to wait elsewhere. Because, there will be built cafes and entertainment.

Pedestrians are also a priority for Sutiaji, the sidewalk will be made one way from the north. This Cultural Heritage in 2019 has entered the auction stage and has received 34 billion from the Central Government. The plan is that in 2020, it will start to be built and complete in 2021.

“Later, this area will not only be like Braga and Malioboro, but it will be better because there are excess transactions using e-money. In accordance with Malang City is a creative city, so it must be different from the others,” he concluded.

On this occasion several speakers from several countries will also appear including Prof. Julaihi Wahid from Sarawak University, Malaysia, Prof. Johanes Widodo from Singapore National University, Prof. Shinji Ikaruga from Yamaguchi University Japan, and Prof. Ulrike Brig from TU Wien Sweden.

In addition, 33 research papers from researchers from several universities in Indonesia will also present the results of their studies, including from the Pancasila University, Diponegoro University, Palangka Raya University, Muhammadiyah University Jakarta, and Universitas Brawijaya as the host.
