Faculty of Engineering Lecturers Provide a Free Learning Management System

The New Normal Era becomes a new challenge for the Education world, not only in Indonesia but throughout the world.

The health protocol in the pandemic period is an important concern for each party in carrying out any activity that involves many people or that results in a group gathering.

Teaching and learning activities become one of the fields that is impossible not to be implemented, where in this new academic year 2020/2021 every school is forced to conduct learning and teaching activities through online methods.

Are schools able to establish an online system in their respective schools? Not all schools have adequate budgets to prepare systems such as learning management systems (LMS) for their schools, and not all staff, teachers and students are prepared to deal with new habits in terms of teaching and learning activities.

With this condition, DrEng Fadly Usman ST MT, Lecturer of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning (PWK) Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) has launched a Learning Management System (LMS) for free, for anyone, any school, who wants to have it .

LMS itself is a means for schools to be able to organize and manage learning materials for students. In this platform it is hoped that all information related to learning and teaching activities can be poured in one platform for all student needs.

Starting from the subject matter, teaching materials, student worksheets, lesson schedules, online classes (online), online course classes, video learning materials, even for the school cooperative.

In collaboration with ICON + which is a subsidiary of PLN (Persero) in the telecommunications sector, LMS is bundled together with the ICON + GSM with data package per month per student starting from Rp20,000.

In this case, the General Manager  ICON + SBU Regional East Java, Agus Widya Santoso explained that, ICON + is ready to work with schools and also the Department of Education throughout East Java to present a cheap and quality online education system.

The manager of ICON + Malang Representative Office, Eko Candrasasmita also added, this free LMS is expected to reduce the burden on students and schools in carrying out learning and teaching activities in the new normal era.

In the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between ICON + and the LMS designer on July 27, 2020, Eko Candrasasmita conveyed a number of complaints from students’ parents about the growing learning costs.

“There was a mother who said that the internet quota of 50K gone in two days, and this was really burdensome for us,” Eko said.

With the use of uncontrolled internet quota ICON + strives to be a solution for education.

The LMS interface itself can be accessed via the internet on the page www.lms4free.com where domain names, header posts, images and so on can be adjusted to the needs of every school that wants to use it.

The services provided include being a gateway to storage of learning materials such as a collection of learning materials, questions, class exam materials, student worksheets, etc., and all of them are made in electronic or digital format and also in print format (print out).

Another feature that can be obtained with the use of this LMS is the online attendance with embedded geo-tag technology so that every student who takes attendance will be located at where they are because it is immediately shown live when students do an online attendance.

Another important feature is online learning, because it is in line with the concept of freedom of learning, there is a video conference platform on the lms4free page where a teacher can conduct online face-to-face activities with a limited number of students.

All online learning activities are also uploaded to the school’s YouTube channel page so that a student can repeat videos of face-to-face activities on different days and opportunities.

“We want to facilitate this teaching and learning process with a simple methods, easy, and also inexpensive. We will share it for free to all schools that need it, just contact us at +62 822-8280-2021,” concluded DrEng Fadly Usman. (mic)
