Indonesia is a tropical country that gets sunshine throughout the year. However, sunlight that reaches the earth also contains UV-A and UV-B rays.

These rays have a negative impact on the skin, from sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

Based on the results of the 2007 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) survey, skin cancer stay as the third highest risk of all types of cancer in Indonesia.

On the other hand, Indonesia also produced 410,094 tons of avocado in 2018. Ususally people only consume the flesh only, while the other part is just thrown away.

This of course will cause a lot of avocado peel and seed waste when viewed from the amount of production.

In fact, avocado seeds and skin contain secondary metabolite compounds such as tannin, flavonoids, and vegetable oils which can be used as chemical absorbents because they can absorb UV.

Seeing this phenomenon, five UB Chemical Engineering students led by Bill Herberton Biyang, created IVERALM, a sunscreen that uses avocado seed and skin waste as raw material.

This innovation is claimed to protect the skin from UV-A and UV-B rays to avoid various skin diseases.

“This product can also hydrate and keep skin moist,” added Bill.

This product also supports the SDGs program in Indonesia in its 12th goal, which is to substantially reduce waste production through recycling and reuse actions to achieve environmentally friendly management.

IVERALM cream is packed in a 60 mL bottle and is packaged in a 15x15x5cm box and sells for IDR 40,000 per bottle.

“If the buyer returns the five used product bottles to us, we will exchange them with a tote bag with an attractive design,” said Bill.

The IVERALM team is planning to cooperate with the Malang Recycling Center (PDU) to recycle the used bottles.

Together with his four friends, Chindy Wulandari, Shafira Azzahra, Silvia Febriani, and Syamsul Lathif Syahli under the guidance of Supriyono, S.T., M.T., the team will strive together with this innovation towards the 2020 National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) XXXIII.

“For the last two months, we have prepared the best we got. In the future, we will develop the IVERALM formula to make it more optimal and increase the variants of bottle sizes and packaging,” explained Bill. (mic)
