LAGA GEMPA, A New Breakthrough in Earthquake Warning System

Four students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB) succeeded in creating a new innovation tool, LAGA GEMPA, Lampu Siap Siaga Gempa. This is a new innovation in an automatic early warning system.

The team leader, Yusuf Yuaniar, explained that these findings could help people save themselves more quickly from the dangers of earthquakes.

“With an alarm sound that can reach two to three bedrooms, fatalities due to earthquake disasters can be reduced,” he said.

Apart from that, this tool can also be used as a night light with a warm white color with a trapezoidal prism design, which can add to the aesthetics of the room.

He added that this innovation uses a Li-ion 18650 battery which power can be recharged so it can save costs.

“Having 13,000mAh of power, this tool can run all day and can be recharged for eight hours,” he said.

This innovation will be included in the Student Creativity Program, the 36th National Student Science Week (PIMNAS) in 2023, organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia on 1-6 November 2023.

Apart from Yusuf Yuniar, this team consists of Cyril Wahyu Dwi Anugrah (Electrical Engineering), M. Fajar Arif (Electrical Engineering), and Deca Melani (Urban & Regional Planning).

This innovation has obtained funding and is currently in the marketing stage. Dr. Tri Nurwati, ST., MT., as the supervisor, said that LAGA GEMPA succeeded in proving and providing a new breakthrough in early warning system before an earthquake occurs.

“This tool has been marketed through educational institutions, boarding houses, and earthquake-prone areas which requires a first warning to mitigate earthquake disasters,” said Yusuf

This tool has been used in Malang City, Cianjur, Yogyakarta, Aceh, Probolinggo, and surrounding areas. Not only that, this tool was also ordered directly by educators from the United Kingdom (UK) as a comparison of competent tools in mitigating earthquake disasters.

LAGA GEMPA is sold for Rp. 400 thousand for one lamp with the advantage of being able to detect earthquakes ranging from low, medium, to high vibrations accompanied by different alarm sounds.

“Currently, we are opening pre-orders and have marketed them through freelancers in Aceh, Yogyakarta, Lombok, Bogor, Probolinggo, Malang, and surrounding areas,” concluded Yusuf.
