PALIAVEST: An Innovation in Palliative Care for Terminal Cancer Patients

PALIAVEST road to PIMNAS 37Students from the Faculty of Engineering collaborated with students from the Faculty of Medicine to create PALIAVEST, a smart vest for palliative therapy for metastatic cancer patients. This vest combines Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) with thermotherapy, aromatherapy, and multimedia based on the Internet of Things (IoT).

Under the guidance of Ir. Nurussa’adah MT, the PALIAVEST development team consists of Muhamad Asyir Zarkasih (FT), Aryo Nabil Maulana (FT), Akmal Mulki Majid (FT), Shalihat Azka Sabrina (FK), and Christalenta Renata Dwi A (FK).

PALIAVEST offers several advantages over existing products on the market. The combination of TENS technology, thermotherapy, aromatherapy, and EKG monitoring in one IoT-integrated device provides a more comprehensive and effective solution for palliative care.

Using electrode pads attached to the patient’s skin, TENS sends frequencies at two levels, low and high, to relieve pain.

This innovation also features an ultrasonic mist maker that produces aromatherapy mist to help relaxation and reduce patient stress. Utilizing a heating pad, the vest provides heat to relieve muscle pain and improve blood circulation.

The vest is also equipped with an EKG to continuously monitor the patient’s heart activity. All these features are controlled and monitored through a smartphone connected to a database, allowing for easy adjustments and real-time monitoring of the patient’s condition.

“This vest can aid in the palliative care of terminal cancer patients. With all the support and effort that has been put in, we hope the team achieves the best possible results,” said Asyir, a team member.

With the spirit of collaboration and innovation, along with thousands of other students, the team will participate in the PKM Implementation Progress Assessment (PKP2) from July 22 to August 3, 2024, and aim to advance to the 37th National Student Science Week (PIMNAS), which will be held from October 16-22, 2024, at UNAIR.
